CranioSacral Therapy to Enhance Healing

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole body health and performance. It is a non-invasive, hands-on therapy that aims to enhance the body’s own healing capabilities. According to the Upledger Institute, CST uses a touch of under 5 grams to release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. This light touch is said to affect the pressure and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, which is the fluid around the brain and spinal cord. This process is thought to relieve pain and dysfunction.

How does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

The brain and spinal cord makes up the central nervous system which influences the body’s ability to function properly. The central nervous system is regulated in part by the craniosacral system (membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord).

As the body endures stresses and strains of daily life, body tissues can begin to tighten and distort the craniosacral system due to stress, injury or aging. These distortions can create tension around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions affecting healthy performance of the central nervous system.

Using CranioSacral therapy the practitioner use a light touch of the hands to evaluate the craniosacral system. This is accomplished by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system. By restoring normal function around the brain and spinal cord CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a host of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.
