Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurveda (pronounced EYE-your-VAY-duh) means the Living Science of Life (AYUR = Living Science, VEDA = Life). It is the holistic healing system of India and is said to be the sister science to Yoga.  As the world’s most ancient, documented holistic science, with texts dating back further than 5,000 years, Ayurveda could be said to be the mother of holistic healing! In short, the practice of Ayurveda is tried and true, as it has been used to prevent and treat diseases for several thousands of years! Modern science is just starting to catch up to some of the truths of the body/mind that Ayurveda has known since ancient times.
Many healthcare modalities are able to address symptoms, but not all of them get at the root of the cause, and even fewer of them offer help for the many layers of the human experience. Ayurvedic Medicine offers real-life therapies for all facets of a person’s being and life —  in order to bring true healing. YOU are UNIQUE in your individual makeup and Ayurveda looks at each person individually, taking into consideration all of the various parts of your whole being — physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, sexually, relationally/socially, even your intergenerational history.
Ayurveda recognizes true HEALTH as thriving in all areas of life. A description of “health” from one of Ayurveda’s foundational text, the Sushruta Samhita:

“The one who is established in Self, who has balanced doshas [constitutional elements], balanced agni [digestion], properly formed dhatus [tissues], proper elimination of malas [waste products], properly functioning bodily processes, and whose mind, soul, and senses are full of bliss.”

How Ayurvedic Medicine Works

This definition of health is very telling of the utterly holistic approach to health and healing that is at the core of Ayurveda. Health is not merely the absence of a diagnosis, but total harmony and balance within and without. When any area of the life of a human being is out of sync, there is disharmony, or “dis-ease”.

Most diseases that currently plague modern life have their root in one or more of the 3 main causes of dis-ease —

  1. Misuse of intellect – when we make choices that go against what we know to be right; not learning from our mistakes
  2. Disrespecting the senses – overuse/ under use/ misuse of the senses; not respecting the sensitivity and wisdom of our senses
  3. Living out of rhythm –  making choices that are out of alignment with circadian, seasonal, and time-of-life rhythms
Ayurveda is exceptionally effective medicine for the modern health concerns that plague so many right now, because it offers us the timely wisdom of how to reconnect to the innate intelligence within the human organism and the align with the natural rhythms for ultimate healing on all levels.
One of the most amazing aspects of Ayurveda is that it teaches all humans to be Self-Healers. Investments in Ayurvedic consultations and treatments offer you the tools to put the power of health and healing back into your own hands. With each session you will learn more about your unique constitution and how to care for yourself throughout the year in order to get healthy and stay healthy.
