What is Sound Healing?

Sound Healing is the direct application of sound vibrations by an instrument or voice, to the auric field surrounding the body and to the physical body itself.

In our daily lives, we acknowledge the cacophonous energy in our bio-field and the related soundscapes playing in our “mind field”.  When we do this during the day we are at a “TUNING” point ~ commonly called a “turning point — at which we choose to “reset” the underlying TONE or vibration of our thoughts and actions or “day”.  To shift from one mental/ physical pattern to another — we enter a still point, a neutral pause. Meditation and mindfulness practices are aimed at entering this Still Point.  At this “point in time” we are able to “tune in” to and reorganize our vibration around a new “tone”.

In sound healing, the tuning forks and instruments used naturally induce a still point and Effortlessly Empower our nervous system & thus our thoughts to Shift naturally into a new desired Tone/state of Being. The beneficial effects of the sound frequencies open the body’s energy pathways, release energy blockages, and calm the nervous system, all of which allow the natural life force ~ Qi or Prana ~ to flow more freely.  Homeostasis is facilitated through resonance that occurs in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system as the “sound signals” are sent throughout the biofield.

In his book Human Tuning, Sound Healing with Tuning Forks, sound pioneer John Beaulieu offers a beautiful insight in his passage “We Are Sound” on page 3.

“Imagine that the whole universe, everything we know…is a fountain of dream images generated and sustained by a submerged sound. Further imagine that everything we do and think, whether good or bad, moral or immoral, is an attempt to seek out and merge with the sound.  Our goal is to return to the source of that fountain. Although we may identify with the object of value … the real attraction is the resonance we experience when in the presence of that person or thing.  The experience vibrates us like a tuning fork and becomes a sonic homing buoy confirming our inner journey.” Further imagine that you are a being of Sound composed of many tones.  Your shape, movements, desires, and motivations, come from an inner concert.  Everything you know and feel is Sound.  Your concert is everywhere…”

 While sitting in an anechoic chamber of total silence and darkness, Mr. Beaulieu conducted a research project in which he listened to the sounds of his nervous system in relation to physical, emotional, and mental states of being. Calmness resulted in the nervous system making a low, even, soft sound.  An argument resulted in his nervous system sounding higher pitched, louder, and screeching.  Listening for over 500 hours, he realized that the nervous system could be tuned like a musical instrument.  Upon striking 2 tuning forks and raising one to each ear, he noted that the sound of his nervous system changed to match the sound of the tuning forks.  He then noticed changes in how he held his body.  Thus began his ground breaking work exploring the effects of tuning forks on consciousness. By selecting 2 tuning forks to create specific sound intervals, his research allowed him to develop protocols that balance the nervous system, enhance motivation, increase creativity, calm anxiety, improve sleep, release the effects of loss and grief, and balance digestion.
