What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral therapy (CST) is a gentle hands on technique that is used to assess and treat the body for any restrictions that may impair normal function. Treatment is done fully clothed, and since it is so gentle, using pressure as light as the weight of a nickel, the therapist is able to illicit the body’s “self-healing mechanisms” without sounding alarms from stress, pressure, or discomfort. The craniosacral system includes the brain and spinal cord, in a semi-closed hydraulic system including the tough fibrous tissue surrounding them, the meninges, and the cerebral spinal fluid. This vital system extends from the bones of the skull, and face down to the sacrum, or tailbone. As restrictions are released from this system, the brain and nervous system is directly impacted, thus effecting change in the neuromuscular, sensori-motor, endocrine, sympathetic, and parasympathetic nervous systems, and through these, all systems of the body. The bodies own self-healing mechanisms are freed up to function optimally. Read more at www.upledger.com

There is research to support what an important role the birthing process plays in brain function and central nervous system problems. Treatment for the infant or child at anytime may release the effects of stress from labor and delivery in a gentle way, encouraging maximum function. As we grow, encountering greater exposure to our world, and acquiring more experiences, we layer impacts to our physiology. These changes progressively impact how well our nervous system functions, and may decrease the flexibility with which it can respond to new insults (physical, mental, medical, viral, biochemical or emotional.)  CST, at any stage of life, can help to return the body to normal functioning. Even problems with head and face shape, cranial bone overlap, and restricted motion can be corrected with the skillful use of CranioSacral Therapy. Since this therapy is so gentle, and works within the child’s tolerance, there are essentially no risks. Conditions or diagnoses which may benefit from CranioSacral Therapy, among others are:
