Where Music, Creativity and Community Meet
What happens when a First Friday Art Walk meets the energy of live improvisational jazz? On September 4, Hawthorn Healing Arts Center will bring those two worlds together for an evening celebrating music, creativity, community, and the many ways they can contribute to a vibrant life.
Improv Jazz Night at Hawthorn will take place from 6–8 p.m. on Friday, September 4, as part of the First Friday Art Walk. The evening will feature a live jazz ensemble featuring Steve Whitney, Hudson Mickel, Andrew Rosales, Sam Ralbovsky and Scott Kanavel on an outdoor stage in the Hawthorn parking lot, along with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
The event is being created in collaboration with James, a longtime producer of musical events who has worked with jazz musicians for years. He has brought together a group of accomplished jazz players who are excited to be part of the evening. The result promises to be less of a traditional concert and more of an experience—one shaped in the moment through improvisation, musicianship, and interaction.
Why music belongs at a place devoted to health
At Hawthorn, the idea of health extends beyond treating symptoms or managing illness. It also encompasses the things that make life feel engaged, connected, and alive. That is part of what makes the arts such a natural fit for a community centered around wellness. Music and creativity invite us to step outside the routines of everyday life. It draws our attention into the present moment, give us an opportunity to experience something collectively, and remind us that health is not only about what happens in the examination room.
For Joshua Phillips, ND, director of Hawthorn Healing Arts Center, the connection between the arts, creativity, and vitality has long been a source of interest. This event is an opportunity to bring that philosophy into the community in a very tangible way: not through a lecture about wellness, but through an evening of music, conversation, food, and shared experience.
And improvisational jazz may be particularly fitting. There is something inherently human about musicians listening to one another, responding in real time, taking risks, and creating something that exists only in that particular moment. It is a reminder that connection isn’t always something we have to plan.
