Dr. Jim Thornburg stands out as a practitioner deeply rooted in the philosophy of Evidence-Based MedicineHawthorn Chiropractor,  Dr. Jim Thornburg is passionate about integrating evidence-based medicine into his practice. But he is not just an excellent practitioner, he is also innovator and inventor of an exciting new tool used for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) known as the T-Tool, an innovation currently used by over 1,500 practitioners of all disciplines.

How it all started

Graduating with a Doctorate of Chiropractic (D.C.) from the University of Western States in 2012, he concurrently pursued a Master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science, showcasing his dedication to a comprehensive understanding of the human body. Rooted in the philosophy of Evidence-Based Medicine, Dr. Thornburg employs a traditional hands-on diversified method to “adjust” his patients. His commitment to providing effective care led him to embrace the McKenzie Method or MDT, a valuable system that not only alleviates symptoms from disc injuries but also empowers patients to actively participate in their healing process.

In addition to traditional chiropractic methods, Dr. Thornburg is well-versed in various soft tissue treatments. Among them is the Graston Technique, where he stands out as an innovator and inventor of a tool used for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) known as the T tool. Believing in the paramount importance of corrective exercise and strengthening for the healing process, Dr. Thornburg encourages his patients to adopt these habits as part of their wellness journey.

Innovations in Soft Tissue Treatment

Dr. Thornburg’s commitment to innovation led him to explore and develop novel approaches to soft tissue treatment. Two highly effective techniques that he regularly employs are colloquially known as “Pin & Stretch” and IASTM. “Pin & Stretch” involves identifying trigger points in muscles, applying pressure, and then stretching the muscle. This technique proves beneficial in loosening muscles, enhancing mobility, flexibility, and reducing focal pain. IASTM, or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation, is an area where Dr. Thornburg has excelled. Trained and certified in the Graston Technique, he utilized metal instruments to “scrape” dense areas of tissue causing dysfunction and pain. However, he found existing tools somewhat cumbersome and began envisioning a more efficient solution.

Besides helping thousands of patients in my office, I also enjoy working at sporting events in the athlete services tent. That was fast paced and important work to do because I was trying to help those athletes continue in their sport at the highest level achievable, At the end of a weekend event my body and especially my hands would be exhausted,” Dr. Thornburg explains. Driven by a desire to enhance his practice, Dr. Thornburg designed the T tool—a three-dimensional, cubical instrument that revolutionized the approach to soft tissue treatment.

“I searched for new and different tools to use and never really felt satisfied with the available products out there. So, one day, I started wondering what a perfect tool for my work would look like. I made several sketches and thought a lot about how to create such a device.”

The Evolution of the T Tool

The journey from concept to market success was a meticulous process. Dr. Thornburg’s dedication to perfecting the design involved creating prototypes, consulting with a CAD engineer, and undergoing about 10 iterations.

When I had the general blueprint I wanted, I had some prototypes made by a machinist friend of mine and started using them in my practice. The concept was quite different than anything else that existed in multiple ways. First, it was cubical or three dimensional in design, and allowed my to hold the tool with a grip rather than pinching a thin, polished piece of stainless steel. Also, I engineered the tool to also assist in the Pin & Stretch technique that I favored so much. As I continued to understand what I had invented, I realized this was a product that my colleagues would benefit from too.”

With a commitment to excellence, he collaborated with a friend to bring the T tool to the market. The T tool, aptly named for its general tissue application and distinctive shape, has become a staple in the toolkit of healthcare practitioners, including massage therapists, physical therapists, and chiropractors. Dr. Thornburg’s innovative approach and dedication to advancing soft tissue treatment have significantly contributed to the success of the T tool.

A Legacy of Healing

“The T tool is currently being used by over 1,500 practitioners of all different disciplines from massage therapy to physical therapists. And of course, Chiropractors like myself,” said Dr. Thornburg.

While Dr. Thornburg exited the company during the early months of the Covid pandemic, his legacy lives on through the continued use of the T tool by practitioners worldwide. His commitment to patient care remains unwavering, and he continues to incorporate the T tool into his chiropractic practice. If you are curious about the T tool and how it could benefit you, Dr. Thornburg invites you to make an appointment for a free demonstration.
